Good news from renewables!

The article reports a lot of interesting data, that I would let you explore. Here I would simply like to highlight the following quotation, that I find really meaningful from my research point of view:

It’s a whole new world: even though investment is down, annual installations are still up; instead of having to subsidise renewables, now authorities may have to subsidise natural gas plants to help them provide grid reliability.

Only a few years ago, this would have sounded paradoxical, if not provocative, but it might well be a realistic scenario now: the key point for the penetration of variable renewables is becoming less and less related to their economic sustainability, and more and more to system integration and grid stability.
