This article – or even just the title! – clearly explains why I decided to explore the prospects of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in my MERCURY project.

Most models do project that CCS will play an important role in the future decarbonization of the energy sector, but the reality is that the actual application of this technology, despite years of efforts, is still to come. This very interesting article gives a very thorough overview of the situation. What are the causes? And what are the implications of this delayed deployment on climate change mitigation? I will explore this point next year during the return phase at FEEM in the context of Work Package 2.

By the way, there is also a “personal” aspect regarding this article. During the preparation of the article, the author – Peter Teffer – interviewed many European researchers active in the CCS field. Since the word CCS is present in the title of my MERCURY project, my name popped up and he contacted me for an interview. We had a very nice and fruitful chat: he was really prepared on the topic. Unfortunately, the part regarding me in the article is eventually quite short, but considering the number of people that Peter told me he had inteviewed, it is indeed a good thing to appear in the article! As you can see, mine is a very meaningful declaration 🙂
