Final seminar at FEEM

Final seminar at FEEM

Last Friday I gave the final seminar of my Marie Curie project here at FEEM. The presentation covered Work Package 2, which essentially is the core of the scenario assessment exercise characterizing the second year of the MERCURY project. The title of the presentation was “Future prospects of renewables, CCS, and nuclear in the EU and beyond: results from the MERCURY project”. The presentation essentially replicated the structure of Deliverable 2.1: an introduction to the project and to WP2, followed…

AIEE – Milan

AIEE – Milan

In the past days I participated in the third annual Energy Symposium organized by AIEE, the Italian branch of IAEE, the International Association for Energy Economics. Indeed this conference did not require a long journey, as it was organized at the Bocconi University, here in Milan. By the way, this was the last conference of my MERCURY project, which will end on next January 15, 2019. Honestly, in terms of research, I did not find any outstanding presentations in the…

Nuclear paper and Deliverable 2.1 completed

Nuclear paper and Deliverable 2.1 completed

Finally in the past days I completed the paper regarding the nuclear task of WP2. Methodologically, the paper is similar to the CCS one: I tried to describe the different power generation futures related to the several scenarios explored, but above all I analyzed the relevant policy costs: differently from the CCS case, where the delayed deployment of CCS does have a considerable effect on policy costs, for nuclear I did not find major changes across scenarios. But I don’t…

SISC – Venice

SISC – Venice

In the past days I participated in the sixth annual conference of the Italian Society for Climate Sciences (SISC, Società Italiana per le Scienze del Clima) hosted by the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. As the name suggests, this conference has more a scientific focus on climate change than my research activity, but it is always good to remain as up-to-date as possible on the multi-dimensional aspects of climate change mitigation. For instance, a couple of keynote speeches regarded the…

Solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models – first full paper

Solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models – first full paper

A couple of months ago I dedicated a post to the completion of the very first draft version of the paper focused on  the solar PV learning activity. I specified that I had shared the document with my co-authors and that, once received their feedback, I would aim at producing the first full version of the paper within end August. Well, this target has essentially been reached 🙂 In fact in the past days I finalized the document and, again,…

Solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models – first paper draft

Solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models – first paper draft

In the last post on this topic, which dates back to March 31, I discussed the end of the modeling work and my ambition to draft the first version of the paper within Spring. Indeed, due to the issues that I had with the renewables (which by the way are still pending… but completion is hopefully not far), I managed to complete this task only in the past days. Thus I am a bit behind schedule, but what counts is…

Solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models – Advancements

Solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models – Advancements

After completing the reporting activity concerning the first year of my Marie Curie project, in the last days I went back the solar PV activity, about which I wrote many posts in the past months. In these days I mostly worked on WITCH, indeed, since in the analysis of the results I had found a small inconcistency in one scenario, which I had to re-run. However, I also started analyzing the replies to the comments that the other teams progressively…

IAERE – Turin

IAERE – Turin

In the past days I took part in the annual conference of the Italian Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (IAERE), which was organized by the Department of Economics and Statistics of the University of Turin. This is a conference that I always attend: since its first edition in Ferrara in 2013, I basically missed only the 2017 edition in Rome… but only because I was in the United States! As I anticipated in the last but one post of…

Solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models – Second submission

Solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models – Second submission

Finally I can provide some updates on the core research activities that I carried out in the last couple of months. After the seminar that I gave in late November at UC Berkeley, apart from fixing some details about the system integration modeling in WITCH that were raised during the talk, I resumed the work about the exploration of pathways of solar PV learning in Integrated Assessment Models, that I had already described in many previous posts. After the analysis…

IAEE – Vienna

IAEE – Vienna

As I had detailed in my post about one month ago, the last part of my second European travel has been dedicated to the 15th European Conference of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE), held in Vienna from September 3 to 6 and titled “Heading towards sustainable energy systems: evolution or revolution?” As a scale, this conference can be compared to the EAERE event, so it was quite huge. Being focused on energy, as a content it is more…
